Before discussing the area of a rectangle we first discuss what is a rectangle?

A rectangle is a quadrilateral that has four sides and four angles each of 90 degrees. One pair (that is made up of two sides) is greater than the other pair of the rectangle. If we make all the sides of a rectangle equal, then it is known as the square.

In rectangle,

There are 4 number of edges,

There are 4 number of vertices,

Internal angle each of 90 degrees.

Trapezium, parallelogram, rhombus, square, and many others are types of rectangles.

**Area of Rectangle**

The area of a rectangle means the square units that are fit into the rectangle. In other words, it can also be said that the space which is occupied within the perimeter of a rectangle is known as the area of a rectangle. Alternatively, a number of units that are covered within the boundary of a rectangle is known as the area of a rectangle.

**How to calculate the area of the rectangle?**

As we all know a rectangle is a two- dimensional plane that has length and breadth.

And, we can calculate the area of the rectangle by Product the two sides of the rectangle. It means,

**Area of rectangle= length* breadth**

We have to follow the following steps to calculate the area of the rectangle:

Step 1: Firstly, note down the length and breadth of the given rectangle from the statement or question.

Step 2: After that, we have to calculate the product of their two sides that is length and breadth by multiplying them.

Step 3: The last step is to give an answer in the square meters.

Let us clear this statement with the help of some examples,

**Example 1:** Find the area of rectangle when the length of rectangle is 6cm and breadth is 7cm.**Solution:**

As, in above question, length and breadth of a given rectangle is 6cm and 7cm respectively.

So, we can apply this in the following formula:

Area= length*breadth Area= 6*7

Area=42cm2

**Example 2:** Find the area of rectangle when length of a rectangle is 9cm and breadth of a rectangle is 10cm**Solution:**

As, length and breadth of a given rectangle is 9cm and 10cm respectively.

So, by applying this value in the following formula:

Area= length* breadth

Area= 9*10 Area= 90cm2 *

*Some other illustrations, *

*Question. Calculate the length of the rectangle when the area of a rectangle is 900cm2 and breadth is 10cm. *

*Sol: Now, in this question we have to calculate the length of the rectangle when, area of rectangle is 900cm2 and breadth is 10cm. So, by applying the formula of area of rectangle we get: *

*Area= length* breadth

Then, put the value of given area and breadth in the above formula:

900= length*10 Then, 900/10 = length Length= 9cm. *

*Question. Calculate the breadth of a rectangle when the length of a rectangle is 30cm and area of a given rectangle is 600cm2. *

*Solution: Now, we have given the length and area of a rectangle that is 30cm and 600cm respectively. And we have to calculate the breadth of the rectangle. Then, by applying the formula of area of the rectangle we get: *

*Area= length* breadth

Now we put the value given in the question in this formula to calculate the

the breadth of the rectangle:

600= 30* breadth

600/30 = breadth

20cm= breadth.

**The perimeter of a Rectangle:**

We can find the perimeter of a rectangle by applying the following formula:

Perimeter= 2(length+ breadth)

The following steps are followed to calculate the perimeter of the rectangle:

Step 1. Firstly, note down the value of length and breadth of the given question or statement.

Step 2. Add the values of length and breadth.

Step 3. Then multiply the resulted equation by 2 to find the perimeter of a rectangle.

Let us clear the above statement with the help of some examples:

**Question.** Calculate the perimeter of a rectangle when the length is 4cm and the breadth is 6cm.**Solution:**

Now, the length and breadth of a given rectangle are 4cm and 6cm respectively.

Then, put this value in the formula of the perimeter of rectangle:

Perimeter= 2(length+breadth)

Perimeter= 2(4+6)

P= 2*10 P=20cm. *

**Question. **Calculate the perimeter of rectangle when length and breadth is 5cm and 8cm respectively.

**Solution: **Now, the length and breadth of a rectangle is 5cm and 8cm respectively. Applying this in the formula:

*Perimeter= 2(length + breadth). Perimeter= 2(5+8) Perimeter= 2*13

P= 26cm.

**Question. **Calculate the perimeter of a rectangle when the length is 6cm and breadth is 3cm.**Solution:**

Now, in this question length and breadth of a given rectangle is 6cm and 3cm

respectively.

We can find the perimeter of rectangle by putting this value in the following

formula:

Perimeter= 2(length+ breadth)

Perimeter= 2(6+3)

Perimeter= 2*9 Perimeter= 19cm *

*How to find the area of the *rectangle when the perimeter of a *rectangle is given? Let us clear this statement with the help of some examples: *

**Question.** Calculate the area of the rectangle when the perimeter of the rectangle is 18cm and the breadth is 6cm.

* Solution: Now, we have given the perimeter of the *rectangle and breadth of the

*rectangle which is 18cm and 6cm respectively.*

*Firstly, we put this value in the formula of perimeter of rectangle to find the length. We get, Perimeter= 2(length+ breadth) Let length of rectangle is x cm. Then, 18= 2(x+ 6) 18= 2x+12 18-12 = 2x 6=2x 6/2 =x X=3cm It means, Length of the rectangle is 3cm. *

*Now, we can easily find the area of the *rectangle by-product* of their sides. Area= length* breadth

Area= 3*6

Area= 18cm2

We can also find the area of the rectangle with the help of its diagonals:

This statement can be clear with help of the following formula:

(Diagonal)2 = (Length)2 + (Breadth)2

(Length)2 = (Diagonal)2 – (Breadth)2

Length = ⎷(Diagonal)2 – (Breadth)2

These all are the methods with the help of which we can find the area of the rectangle.

And we clear all these methods with the help of some examples.
